#Scheduler primavera p3 vs p6 software
Many large-scale projects (Construction, Energy, and Aerospace) could not be effectively scheduled on any other software platform. Perhaps the most significant advantage of Primavera™ is the sheer magnitude of the processing capability that can compute complex construction CPM schedules that contains thousands of activities and relationships. Furthermore, Primavera™ allows multiple project-level construction schedules to be open simultaneously for program-level analysis. Different levels of authority can be assigned to different users for security and organizational purposes. Primavera™ offers many advantages that other applications cannot match such as a centralized database that multiple users can access at any given time. Primavera™ (P3-P6) applications have long been the construction scheduling tool of choice for construction scheduling consultants and construction schedulers throughout the industry.
#Scheduler primavera p3 vs p6 professional
The following comparison is based on our professional opinion only software is constantly changing and the comparison was based on the features available when this White Paper was written 7-25-2013. Based on our professional opinion and extensive construction scheduling experience, we almost always recommend Primavera™ P6 applications for the vast majority of construction schedules although, MS Project™ can still be a useful tool in the correct application. Knowing which software to choose for specific construction scheduling services or a specific type of project, can significantly improve the efficiency of the construction scheduling process and produce a higher quality construction CPM schedule that is more commensurate with the needs of the project. While it is always a good idea to check the Schedule Log for possible open ends elsewhere in the schedule, there should be no open ends as a result of dissolving activities.White Paper: Construction Scheduling: Primavera™ vs. Now that Activity B has been dissolved, Activity A is a predecessor to Activity C and the total amount of time has been reduced to 10 days:Įasy as pie, unless I’m the one baking it. In the next screenshot, I have highlighted Activity B and then right-clicked to select dissolve from the menu: So the total amount of time required for these three tasks in 15 days:
In the screenshot below I have three activities, each with a duration of 5 days, linked together using Finish to Start relationships. Here is an example of how the dissolving process works. In theory this should be an acceptable change to the logic, since Activity A was already an indirect predecessor to Activity C. Dissolving Activity B would result in Activity A becoming a predecessor to Activity C. Say for example that Activity A precedes Activity B, which in turn precedes Activity C.
So what exactly does “dissolve” do? Well, when you dissolve an activity its predecessors are linked to the successors of the dissolved activity. Regardless, many P3 users ignored the feature and continue to do so in the current programs. But dissolving activities is nothing new, as Primavera P3 incorporated this feature many years ago. To avoid this problem, I dissolve activities instead.Īll of the current versions of Primavera scheduling software have the ability to dissolve activities: Primavera Contractor, Primavera P6 Professional, and Primavera P6 EPPM. After all, you might be deleting the only successor to another activity in the schedule, or deleting the only predecessor to another activity. This, however, often leads to open ends in the logic. And most users will simply delete the unnecessary activities.
We all make mistakes, or perhaps the scope of work has changed, which leads to activities being deleted in the schedule.
